How Does The Air Control Valve Work?


During the operation of the air control valve, the piston of the air control valve is usually driven back and forth in the following three ways to achieve external output power.

 

Electromagnetic drive: In common air control valves, electromagnetic solenoids are used to move the internal components of the valve. 

When the solenoid is energized, it generates a magnetic field that moves the plunger or spool inside the valve, opening or closing the flow path.


Manual control: In some systems, a lever or dial can be used to manually adjust the air control valve to regulate the airflow.

 

Pneumatic drive: Pneumatic valves can also be driven 

y the pressure of the air itself. When the pressure increases, the valve components can be pushed to open or close the air path.

 

The following is an example of electromagnetic drive, which specifically introduces the operation process of air control valves. 

The core function of the 5/2 valve is to achieve switching control of the two directional actions of double acting actuators (such as double acting cylinders).

Through the conversion of two positions, air is orderly guided to the output port, completing complex mechanical actions.




5/2 air control valve is a directional valve with five ports and two working positions, widely used to control the reciprocating motion of double acting cylinders. 

Compared with the 3/2 valve, it can control the airflow to switch between two output directions, achieving forward and reverse actions of the cylinder.


P (Port 1): Compressed air input port


A (Port 2)&B (Port 4): Output ports, connecting the two ends of the cylinder


R (Port 3)&S (Port 5): Exhaust ports, corresponding to the exhaust of A and B


Working status one (inactive, normally closed):

Compressed air enters the valve body from the P end.

The internal valve core is in the default position, at this time:

Air flows from the P → A end, pushing the cylinder piston forward (or extending).

The air at the B end is discharged through S (port 5) 

In this state, the cylinder completes a directional action.

Working state two (activated state):

When the valve receives an activation signal (such as electromagnetic coil power on or gas signal input), the internal valve core switches to the second position.

At this moment:

Air flows from the P → B end, pushing the cylinder piston to move in the opposite direction (or retract).

The air at end A is discharged through R (port 3) .

The cylinder begins to move in the opposite direction.

After the activation signal is removed, if it is a single electronic control structure (such as with spring reset), the valve core will automatically return to its original position.

If it is a dual electronic control structure (without springs), another electrical signal is required to switch the valve core back to its initial state.

The two structures have different control methods, but the principle is the same - switching the supply and exhaust directions 

of the two output terminals to control the forward and reverse movement of the cylinder.
